The Trumpet
The trumpet is a the highest member of the brass family. Unlike it's nearest relative, the cornet which has a more conical shape, the trumpet is a cylindrical instrument consisting of about about 5 feet of tubing. The trumpet's cylindrical shape allows for a sharper, more crisper tone quality. Historically, the trumpet would play fanfare-like passages, while the cornet played more melodic passages.
